Suranne Kendall is the newest addition to the Art for Guernsey team and she’s been doing a wonderful job. As well as general gallery duties, Suranne has been helping with the Summer Holiday Art Club. She told us more about her experiences so far.
I began working with Art for Guernsey in October 2023 after David Ummels came into the College of FE where I was studying a Level 3 Creative and Digital Arts course and spoke about the gallery and all the different opportunities.
I then contacted David and the team and asked to take part in work experience over the October half-term holiday, working with Lucy Brimage at the Holiday Art Club. Since then, through school holidays I have helped out with the Art Clubs.
Now that I have finished college I got in touch with David and the team once again to see if there was an opportunity for me to work at the gallery over the summer. I started full-time at the gallery at the beginning of July and have been given amazing opportunities to gain valuable experience such as meeting and working alongside Chris Foss, greeting visitors and answering questions they may have, and continuing to work alongside Lucy Brimage at the Summer Holiday Art Club.
The Summer Holiday Art Club has definitely been one of the highlights of working at the gallery. In the first week I joined Lucy and the students to go to the Fab Lab at the Guille-Allès Library. Whilst there we learnt a range of things, and took a look at all the different equipment that they have such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters and sublimation to make your own t-shirts. Each child got a 3D printed alien to feature in their very own film alongside their homemade goo!
Making the goo was a really fun experience for the children as they were supplied with a range of different ingredients and
got to make their own slime with different consistencies, textures and colours.
