Transformation Art for Guernsey

The Art for Guernsey Gallery in the heart of the Old Quarter was filled with artworks by some of the UK’s top contemporary and street artists, who took over every inch of the gallery walls prior to work beginning on the redevelopment of the building. The gallery is intended to be a catalyst to help take the Old Quarter on a new journey, and this unique exhibition was created to raise funds for the fit-out.

Daniel Hosego, Teddy Baden, Leo Boyd, Vesna Parchet and Charlie Mcfarley were in residence from 14-20 January 2022, collaborating with a select group of talented local students. A further 17 UK-based street artists sent artworks which featured in the exhibition – many of them represented by the Atom gallery in London.

INTRODUCING OUR ARTISTS

Transformation Art for Guernsey

DANIEL HOSEGO

Daniel Hosego is a British artist and draughtsman working with pen and ink on both paper and perspex. He makes complex and detailed drawings, sometimes expansive, layered with allusions to history and contemporary culture. Daniel’s compositions are then recreated using modern mass-production printing techniques to transform them into an up-to-date discussion of artistic frustration within the fragmentation characteristic of the modern world.

TEDDY BADEN

Teddy Baden’s artwork is a celebration of an incredible relationship: the unique bond between humans and dogs. He is fascinated by human society’s endearing subsumption of another species, which goes back some 15,000 years. Teddy began presenting his work in public spaces on the walls and streets of London using aerosol and paint pens as well as acrylic paints and brushwork.

LEO BOYD

Leo Boyd is a screen printer and street artist based in Belfast. His work is often playful, both in his use of mediums and themes, which tend towards mashing day-glo pop culture with surveillance capitalism and the day-to-day absurdity of modern life.

Vesna Parchet

Vesna Parchet’s work reflects on the complexities of the human form with the aim to capture its intricacies through a variety of materials and techniques such as painting, printmaking and mixed media art. Vesna explores themes around the self and the fluidity of the human figure and its boundaries with abstraction. Her subjects move in the spheres of growth and transformation, conscious and subconscious, order and chaos and are often less clear cut in their shape, carrying the weight of the past and the present, mythologies and archaic impulses and desires.

Charlie Mcfarley

Brought up in Hackney, East London during the 1980s, Charlie was raised on a diet of underground music and art that flourished in his surrounding environment. As a professional creative he draws his influences from the early days of graffiti and 1970s comic book art. Charlie has exhibited work in galleries across the UK and has had successful solo shows in London.

“We were absolutely delighted that before the fit-out phase we were able to hand over the gallery to five of the most inspiring British street artists, who created a never-before-seen experience for islanders. It created a perfect opportunity for some of the most promising art students in the island to learn from the best and take the measure of their future home. It also set up an ideal platform for Art for Guernsey to engage with the community, invite islanders to visit the space, communicate our plans and officially launch the fundraising campaign for the fit-out phase. This gallery aims to create an absolutely game-changing environment for the visual arts on the island and, with the help of all our supporters, benefactors and sponsors, and the amazing passion and drive animating the team, I am confident that we will succeed to deliver this for the common good of the island.”
