Myths & Legends was the theme of the 2021
WriteStuff competition for aspiring young wordsmiths.
This theme presented Art for Guernsey with an ideal opportunity to show a selection of Charlie Buchanan’s works, ahead of a larger forthcoming exhibition, L’s Olures (‘The Myths’ in Guernésiais) once the project was complete. Art for Guernsey was delighted to support Charlie in this venture by curating this small exhibition, which aligned the visual arts and literature, in association with the Guernsey Literary Festival.
Charlie Buchanan has a long-standing relationship with Art for Guernsey. We curated an exhibition for her in 2018 and sponsored the publication of Charlie and Magnus Buchanan’s book The Invasion of the Wavelets, as well as supporting the production of a shadow play of this story.

There were four categories: primary (Years 3-6), intermediate (Years 7-9), senior (Years 10+) and Special Educational Needs (SEND). The judging panel was blown away by the quality of the entries received!
The competition was kindly sponsored by Julius Baer and supported by partners the Guille-Allès Library, Art for Guernsey, Island Families, The Guernsey Arts Commission, and Guernsey Museums. Head judges included writers Francesca Simon, Maz Evans, Joanne Harris and Huw-Lewis Jones.
These watercolour paintings by Charlie Buchanan served as an inspiration for students. As well as cash prizes and signed books, students were also gifted an original illustration of their story by local artist, illustrator and graphic designer James Colmer.

“Charlie Buchanan has a long-standing relationship with Art for Guernsey. We turned the story into a film to support the launch of the Children’s Library, a project made in collaboration with the Youth Commission. It’s a real pleasure working with Charlie and we were delighted to support her.”
