Locally based artist Frances Lemmon travelled to Costa Rica to track the legacy of William Le Lacheur, who opened the coffee trade route and introduced football to Costa Rica.
Art for Guernsey distributed information packs about William Le Lacheur to Bailiwick schools, so that they could learn about this influential Guernseyman through multi-curricular activity. As a result, schoolchildren created their own responses to his legacy, which were exhibited at Market Square to celebrate the second year of Art in School, our innovative art-lending programme.
Art for Guernsey also invited the island’s schoolchildren to enter a design competition to create ‘the most beautiful football shirt ever made’, with a brief to reference both Guernsey and Costa Rica. The 18 winning designs were on display as part of the Art in School exhibition, alongside the hundreds of design entries submitted. These winning shirts were gifted to each of the designers and were worn by more than a hundred boys and girls as part of a Festival of Football tournament, in collaboration with the Guernsey FA and the Guernsey Sports Commission. Frances even kicked the first ball with the great-great-grandson of William Le Lacheur! Further, the shirts were worn by the ball boys and girls at the Guernsey vs Armed Forces team as part of the Guernsey FA’s 125th year celebrations.
Finally, each winning shirt was sent as part of a shirt swap gift to children in Costa Rican schools, as part of a cultural exchange which, it is hoped, will foster greater relations between the two countries.
