Art for Guernsey is delighted to announce that its latest exhibition, ‘Impressions of Guernsey’, is to open at the beginning of June, featuring artworks by the incredibly talented post-Impressionist artist Dimitri Permiakov, who is extremely well regarded internationally.

As Art for Guernsey’s Jock Pettitt explained:  “Dima considers Guernsey as a second home, and people embrace him as one of our own. He’s given so much of himself through workshops and visits to schools, and he’s been a big part of our journey towards opening a gallery. The way Dima sees and portrays the island connects people to the landscapes they love, giving them a new appreciation of them. Dima, who paints in oils, works with an urgency that is rarely seen, with brush strokes that are snappy and intensive. In his schooling he was encouraged to produce work after work, and through that intensity he’s learned to trust his mark-making implicitly.”

Dima’s artworks have been exhibited twice in Guernsey over the last seven years, but in contrast to these prior exhibitions, ‘Impressions of Guernsey’ features a number of smaller artworks, and landscapes we have not seen from him before. Although Dima is used to large landscapes such as the Ural Mountains, he has found an affinity between his home and Guernsey. He is used to a coastal, fishing culture, and he is drawn to places that can at times be dark, windy and a little bleak. For example, Dima captures St Peter Port on a rainy day, as well as subtle nighttime scenes that are moody and atmospheric.

“For centuries Guernsey has inspired and fostered global artistic talent, and we take great pride in supporting Dima and his continuing relationship with the island.  Dima has a masterful talent to capture emotional depth in the island’s settings, and his art resonates with many of the island’s community who find a connection with his work.  As we head towards another glorious Guernsey summer, there is no better time to celebrate and support Dima’s continuing exploration of the island’s nature, scenery and fleeting moments in light.”
