Clarice Greening felt compelled to study hands and their individual aspects, such as the wrinkles that define them, the fingerprints that make them identifiable and the story that the condition of each hand can tell.
Clarice became fascinated by how we can use our hands to communicate through sign language, and the similarity of communicating through the process of mark-making in visual arts such as painting and drawing. The contrast of the drawings and the strong highlights in the hands exaggerate the intricate shapes made by the signs.

Clarice attended deaf club and regularly kept in contact with the deaf community of Guernsey to inspire her drawings and integrate their stories and experiences into her pieces, so that their opinions and feelings would not fall on deaf ears.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“By creating these large-scale, life like drawings, I hoped that people would become more aware of how ‘sign’ can be widely recognised and accepted as a language, alongside its spoken and visual counterparts. After all, sign and visual communication far superseded the spoken language in our evolution and was fundamental in the success of humankind.”
