Literary Beards was an exhibition of original Chris Riddell illustrations, shown at Guille-Allès Library in support of the Children’s Library Project.
Chris Riddell is a former Children’s Laureate who, when he visited the library, was so inspired by the story of its founders Thomas Guille and Frederick Allès – and by their magnificent beards – that on returning home, he produced 10 illustrations of bearded figures from literature. Chris donated the illustrations, which included Dumbledore, Gandalf and Tolstoy, to the library. In March 2018 Art for Guernsey supported the Guille-Allès to transform the Hayward Room into an art gallery to showcase these fabulous artworks.
