Of Earth & Islands
Art for Guernsey would love you to come and see our current exhibition, ‘Of Earth and Islands’, which will be at the Art for Guernsey Gallery until 2nd March 2024. It features artworks by three hugely talented and diverse local artists: Charlie Buchanan, Sally Ede-Golightly and Bridget Spinney.
Charlie’s collection is about local island folklore, whilst Sally explores the relationship between two radically different islands of similar land mass, Guernsey and Hong Kong, contemplating the phenomenon of ‘islandness’. Bridget’s work is about her lifelong love of nature, capturing moments of its transience such as the blooming of a flower using inks made directly from plants in her garden.
Art for Guernsey’s Jock Pettitt said:
“We have worked with Charlie before, thoroughly immersing ourselves again in the myths and folklore narratives that she describes in bold watercolour compositions that ooze with character. The same is true of Sally, remembering our commission of the Yardeskie portrait commemorating the heroism of a Czech pilot, we see much more sentiment in this body of work, with the compositions a window on her family’s history and the theme of an island home. We have briefly engaged with Bridget too, but this is the first time we have really worked together and we love the zest and exploration that is evident in her work, exploring the subtleties and details in nature. Combined, I think these make for a diverse and mesmerising exhibition.”
