A Day in 1883 Art for Guernsey

A Day in 1883

In September 1883, French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir arrived in Guernsey and stayed for just over a month. During this period, he produced at least 15 paintings, most depicting scenes in and around Moulin Huet bay.

In this exhibition we explore why he chose to come to Guernsey, how he got here, what life would have been like in the island at the time and the earthly paradise he encountered – with a particular focus on the nude bathing customs he discovered at Moulin Huet, which provided him with a source of inspiration that had a profound influence on the direction of his career.
