Arts for Impact were approached by the Princess Elizabeth Hospital Radiology Department to decorate their new X-Ray Room.
The brief was to make the room more friendly and approachable for young patients, since frightened children are difficult to scan. Arts for Impact transformed the room into a spaceship interior, complete with portholes, control panels and airlock doors. The ‘spaceship room’ has proved very popular with children, and Radiology staff report that becoming absorbed in their surroundings reduces young patients’ stress levels and makes it easier for them to keep still, reducing the need for the higher dose of radiation involved in rescanning. Arts for Impact wondered if their X-Ray Room concept could be applied to other hospitals. They contacted AGFA, the manufacturer of the equipment, and were commissioned to decorate two rooms at Exeter Wonford Hospital.
