Joint venture between the Guernsey Education Department and Art for Guernsey. In September 2018, we launched “Art in School”, an innovative art lending program where Guernsey based art collectors graciously lend artworks of museum quality to 18 Guernsey schools (private, public, primary, secondary), allowing more project based learning opportunities. The artworks are used as a starting point for multidisciplinary journeys and allow the participating Guernsey schools, through the new Joyous and Purposeful Curriculum, to cover subjects as diverse as geography, history, geometry, food technology, creative writing, maths, science and poetry in a cross curriculum context, providing a platform to stimulate lateral and critical thinking. The artworks rotate on term basis so that the schools have the opportunity to gain exposure to the portfolio. An island wide “Children & Masters” art exhibition has been organised in June at the Market Place to celebrate the first anniversary of our successful collaboration with more than 90 % of the schools of Guernsey. At this occasion, 21 original masterpieces and more than 120 children artworks were professionally curated. More than 600 children came to see their artworks, plus the general public.
A documentary film on this initiative is currently in the making and its première is anticipated in November, at Beausejour or St James, followed by a Tier One panel debate on the importance of critical and lateral thinking in Education.
